In confirmation class on Monday, we talked about prayer, including how to pray outloud with others. And since this week, we hear Jesus inviting us to let our lights shine before others, it seemed appropriate to share that lesson with you.

So first consider the occasion. When might you be invited to pray outloud in public? Here's a suggestive (not exhaustive) list.

  • at Thanksgiving or another meal
  • a birthday, anniversary, or another celebration
  • with someone in the hospital or going through a struggle
  • before we start something (like a trip, meeting, service project, etc.)

Sometimes all we need is a simple framework. I was taught to pray in an ancient 4-part form called a "collect" prayer. "Prayers of the Day" in worship are examples of collect prayers. Notice how the parts are present in that prayer we pray together.

The Four-Step Structure

1. Name God or "Address"

Examples: "Holy God," "Lord God," "Good & Gracious God,"

2. Remember God’s Saving Action (aka, a Bible Story)

Examples:

  • "You confound the world's wisdom,"
  • "Your lovingkindness goes before us,"
  • "Your Son healed the sick"

3. The Ask / Request

Examples:

  • "Direct our steps"
  • "Give us a hunger for justice"
  • "Stir up your spirit of healing with ______"

4. "So That..." or how the ask will serve the world

Examples:

  • "others see Jesus in us"
  • "..." (sometimes this part is omitted)
  • "...and everyone who's in the hospital today"

Four parts, in sum: Name, Remember, Ask, for the World. You can start composing your prayer at any of the steps, working outward to let all 4-parts harmonize with the occasion. Confirmation students practiced by writing prayers for a 4th of July bbq, a hospital visit, and more. When might you pray outloud with others?
