On Wednesday, January 28, local ELCA Lutheran clergy and I visited the Davenport offices of Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst. Brokenhearted about recent ICE action in Minnesota, we delivered a letter urging our Senators to give no additional funding to ICE without accountability. Fourteen ELCA clergy from the greater Quad Cities area signed it, including myself. Love of neighbor moved us, and our letter borrowed language from a recent ELCA Advocacy action alert. You can read the letter below.
The staffer we spoke with from Senator Ernst's office received the letter and took down our questions to pass on to the Senator, but otherwise gave no response. She did say that in the last week the office has fielded a great deal of communication about ICE in Minnesota. I was not present for the meeting with Senator Grassley's staff, but my colleagues said there was some dialogue. The Senate will vote on ICE funding this week.
We are blessed to live in a democratic nation, and I encourage you also, as your faith and conscience guides you, to reach out to our elected officials. Feel free to disagree with me.
Thanks and peace,
Pastor Clark
