"Spirit, Open Our Hearts" is the theme for 2025 Southeastern Iowa Synod Assembly, which gathers Saturday, May 17 at Grand View University in Des Moines. Pastor Clark and Julie Kalwarf will attend as voting members.
The Southeastern Iowa Synod is a network of 135 congregations--including Zion!--and other ministry partners who are called to share God’s love in Jesus Christ in 38 counties in the southeastern corner of the state. Each year, we gather for Assembly, for worship, church business, and deepening faith.
This year's Synod Assebly offering will be gathered for Iglesia Camino de Emaús (Road to Emaus Church), a Spanish-speaking worshipping community in the Quad Cities. Zion will contribute $750, a tithe from a generous gift from Lisa Zolusis's estate.
Two years ago, Pr. Jose Pilar Alvarez Cabrera, the former bishop of Iglesia Luterana Agustina de Guatemala (ILAG) arrived in the Quad Cities and began gathering people into the Iglesia Camino de Emaús. The Southeastern Iowa Synod has partnered with the Northern Illinois Synod and the ELCA to bring this ministry to fruition. In Iowa, Iglesia Camino de Emaús meets at St. Mark in Davenport. The synod's fundraising campaign means a great deal to our brothers and sisters, especially during this fearful time for immigrants.
